Central Ghats & Ceremonies

The central ghats form the busiest section of the Varanasi riverfront. This area hosts the grand evening Ganga Aarti and eternal cremation fires.

These ghats sit at the heart of the city's 7-kilometer riverfront network. The 18th-century structures draw heavy crowds daily for rituals and boat departures.

Visiting on foot is free, but you can also hire a boat to view the ceremonies from the water. Prepare for narrow lanes, large crowds, and strict rules regarding respectful behavior at cremation sites.
